Eco Bags: Recycled Paper, Calico, Canvas, Jute and Bamboo

Recycled paper bags, Fair Trade or organic cotton, canvas, jute, and bamboo cloth bags are viable alternatives to the dreaded plastic bag. More than 500 billion plastic bags are used around the world each year, mostly once only, and then discarded in landfill or litter, or end up in our oceans.

The paper bags in our range are either made in Australia from 100% post-consumer recycled paper or some are made overseas from 60% FSC-certifed recycled paper + 40% FSC-certified kraft paper, while the organic cotton, Fair Trade cotton, and jute bags from India and the bamboo bags from China are longer-life products, designed for maximum reuse, thereby saving the consumption of hundreds of plastic bags.

ORGANIC COTTON BAGS:

Cotton is a wonderfully versatile, breathable, absorbent, soft fibre of global importance. But the farming, irrigation and pest control practices of conventionally grown cotton are proving problematic for the planet.

Gradually a new option is becoming available, with more cotton being grown organically (no pesticides or fungicides) and sometimes without irrigation. Initially available in clothing, towels and bed linen, organic cotton is now being used in a wider variety of fabric applications, including T-shirts, bags and caps. While supplies are still limited, there is no doubt that the spread of organically grown cotton will continue, saving water, soils, energy and preventing chemical pollution.

FAIRTRADE COTTON BAGS:

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

JUTE BAGS:

Jute is a versatile, natural fibre that has been used for centuries to make things such as rope, twine, hessian bags, rugs, and more. It is completely biodegradable, and requires less cultivation and maintenance than cotton.

BAMBOO BAGS:

These bags are made from sustainable, renewable Bamboo fibre. Plantation grown, pesticide and fertilizer free, and biodegradable. The bamboo is not sourced from a food source plantation. The bamboo fabric has a ‘raw’ feel rather than a ‘silky’ feel as it is made from spunbond Bamboo fibre and not the more damaging (in its production) rayon fibre.

RECYCLED PAPER BAGS

There are several types of recycled paper bags available: ranging for 100% recycled, made in Australia from post-consumer waste; to overseas-made 60% FSC-certified recycled paper and 40% FSC-certified kraft paper.

Recycled paper bags are viable alternatives to the dreaded plastic bag. More than 500 billion plastic bags are used around the world each year, mostly once only, and then discarded in landfill or litter. Use recycled and save water, energy and trees, and reduce paper waste.

 NO to Non-Woven ‘green’ bags

Note that we don’t supply non-woven bags (eg like the green or blue supermarket shopping bags) as these are actually made from non-recycled plastic (polypropylene). While they might last longer than one-way plastic bags, they are still made from plastic and are problematic in their production and disposal.
